Minecraft Formatting Codes

CodeEffectNotes
§kObfuscated (scrambled letters)Both editions
§lBoldBoth editions
§mStrikethroughJava Edition only. In Bedrock this letter is a color.
§nUnderlineJava Edition only. In Bedrock this letter is a color.
§oItalicBoth editions
§rResetClears the color and formatting

Put the color code first and the formatting code after it. A color code placed after a formatting code turns that formatting off, so reapply the formatting if you change color mid-line.

Bedrock-Only Color Codes

Bedrock Edition adds extra colors that Java does not have. Note that §m and §n are material colors here, not strikethrough and underline.

§gMinecoin Gold#EFCE16
§hMaterial Quartz#D9CCB8

§qMaterial Emerald#13A045

§tMaterial Lapis#577BFF
§uMaterial Amethyst#B66CDD
§vMaterial Resin#FF6A00

Bedrock also shades the shared colors slightly differently. For example, gray is #C5C5C5 in Bedrock and #AAAAAA in Java. Some codes, such as §g, are not available on every platform.

Where You Can Use Minecraft Color Codes

Bedrock Edition

Java Edition

Java Edition does not accept the section sign in normal chat, and recent versions block it in books, so use commands or server plugins instead. Game rules change between updates, and Mojang treats these codes as a legacy feature, so test in your own version.

Tips for Cleaner Colored Text

Minecraft codes work like the ANSI colors in our Discord colored text generator, where a short code colors the words after it. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Minecraft color codes?

Java Edition has 16 color codes, from 0 (black) to f (white), each written with the section sign, for example the section sign followed by a for green. Bedrock Edition adds more material colors such as redstone, copper and emerald.

How do I make colored text in Minecraft?

Type a color code before the words you want to color. In places that accept codes, such as Bedrock books, signs, anvil renames and name tags, the text after the code takes that color until another code or a reset code changes it.

What is the difference between the section sign and the ampersand?

The game itself reads the section sign. Many server plugins let players type an ampersand instead and convert it for them. If a plugin shows the ampersand as plain text, try the section sign instead and check the plugin documentation.

Do formatting codes work in both editions?

Bold, italic, obfuscated and reset work in both. Underline and strikethrough use the codes m and n in Java Edition, but those same two letters are material colors in Bedrock Edition.

How do I reset Minecraft text formatting?

Add the reset code r. It clears the current color and formatting so the text that follows returns to normal.
